POLITICAL WAR IN THE HOUSE OF GOD
Until now, Imo state has been one of the more peaceful
states in Nigeria as far as political violence is concerned. But now,
the situation has changed.
The political
heavyweights contesting the number one seat in Imo state, seem to have
charged the political atmosphere in the state, as the ‘Heartland’ as Imo
is fondly called, has now been struck by political violence.
The
candidates, each of whom have an enviable political pedigree, are the
incumbent governor, Rochas Okorocha, the deputy speaker of the federal
House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, and the former minister of the
interior, Emmanuel Iheanacho.
One recurring issue in the state
that has continued to generate controversy is the governorship debates
organised by various groups, as it would seem that each time there is a
debate about to be held, or during the debate, violence breaks out.
Recently,
the Catholic Church in Owerri decided to organise its own debate. But
what should have been a smooth process was marred by violence
between rival groups of women with connections to political parties in
the state.
