The Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) has disclosed that several attempts made by the leadership of the Christian body to have a meeting with the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, for them to contribute to the preparation and success of the general election was shunned by the INEC chairman.
The CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, who disclosed this yesterday at a one- day interactive meeting for a smooth transition of Nigeria’s democracy, organised by Think Nigeria Christian-Muslim Movement in Abuja, explained that a meeting with the INEC chairman was arranged by the CAN general secretary, Reverend Musa Asake, based on dates given to them by the INEC boss.
Oritsejafor said, “On that agreed date, I was ready and about to travel down to Abuja when I got a call from the CAN general secretary that the INEC chairman, Prof. Jega, said that he cannot meet with us again, because he is too busy. We asked for an alternative date, which he refused to grant us.
“Till today, I the leader of all Christians in Nigeria have not been able to see the INEC chairman. I could not meet this man, to have a discussion with him.”

‘CAN Had No Appointment With Jega’
Meanwhile, in a swift reaction, the chief press secretary to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),Mr Kayode Idowu, said the INEC chairman did not schedule any meeting with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
“I don’t know where that is coming from. I have a fair idea of the chairman’s schedule and places he was supposed to go as contained in his diary. I doubt that he has a meeting with CAN. I doubt that he knows he has a meeting with CAN,” he said
