JOHANNESBURG – The Justice and Correctional Services Ministry on Friday said it was communicating with apartheid hitman Eugene de Kock’s lawyer, who claimed his client had gone missing from prison.
De Kock’s attorney said he understood his client was still being held by a government agency and hadn't yet been released.
'Prime Evil', as de Kock was dubbed, was the commanding officer of the unit which kidnapped, tortured and murdered numerous anti-apartheid activists from the 1980s to early 1990s.

Six weeks ago the ministry said it was going to release de Kock on parole after he’d served over twenty years of a 212 year sentence for crimes he committed during apartheid.

His lawyer Julian Knight said he should have been taken from Pretoria central prison to the community corrections section.

“From what I understand, he is with one of the government agencies, but he is not in community correction.”

The Correctional Services Ministry's Mthunzi Mhaga said he couldn't give much detail because de Kock himself had asked for the date and place of release to be kept secret.

But he did say that they were speaking to Knight about de Kock's location.

“I’m not at liberty to comment on the whereabouts of Mr de Kock or anything that relates to his release on parole.”

De Kock was granted parole in February when Justice Minister Michael Masutha announced that he’d met all the necessary requirements.

Masutha said he had adequate consultation with his victims families.
